Fruit Box Theatre in association with bAKEHOUSE Theatre Company presents CRUISE by Jack Holden
DIRECTORS NOTE
Thank you for joining Fruit Box Theatre for the Australian premiere of Cruise by Jack Holden. It has been my immense honour to bring this story to life over the last several months with this exceptional team, and I am excited to be able to share it with you tonight.
Fruit Box Theatre was established with a mission to connect queer artists and to tell queer stories in a way that builds community. Cruise represents a powerful continuation of this mission and an extension of our work to connect queer people across generations. Growing up in the decades after the AIDS crisis, the glaring absence of a large older generation to look up to is felt by many young queers like me. We lost nearly an entire generation, and stories like Cruise help us keep their memories alive. They allow us to honour those who fought for the rights and safety we have today. I give a special thanks to our community consultants Wilfred Roach, Jonny Seymour and Helen Fraser, who lived and protested and worked and partied through the worst years of the AIDS crisis, and have helped us tell this story with as much accuracy as possible.
Cruise is not just a theatrically exciting piece of art, it’s also a time capsule and a reminder of how much our community has gone through and how the need to support each other continues. This is why we are delighted to be partnering with the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation (BGF) for this production. Established in 1984, BGF is a vital lifeline for thousands of people living with HIV. The Foundation offers tailored services ranging from financial assistance to counseling, housing support to advocacy, BGF ensures that no one has to face the challenges of living with HIV alone. During select performances of Cruise, BGF volunteers will be collecting donations at the exits.
I sincerely hope you leave the theatre feeling more connected to your history, more in touch with our queer lineage, and ready to keep fighting for queer liberation in all its many forms.
All my love,
Sean
